By bus: HRTC and private Volvo buses leave from Kashmere Gate ISBT in the evening. The overnight ride takes 11 to 12 hours. Book a few days early during holidays, seats fill up fast.
By train: Take a train to Pathankot, then either a taxi (around 3 hours) or the small toy train on the Kangra Valley line. The toy train is slow, but the views are lovely if you have time.
By flight: Fly to Gaggal Airport in Kangra. It’s around 40 km from Palampur, roughly an hour by cab. Fastest option, but flights get cancelled in bad weather, so keep a backup plan.
Best time for a weekend trip to Palampur
March to June is my favourite. The tea gardens are bright green, days are pleasant, and nights are cool.
September to November is also lovely. The sky clears up after the rains and you get the best mountain views of the year.
December to February gets cold, and if you’re lucky, you might catch snow on the peaks.
July and August bring heavy rain. Roads can get blocked and landslides are common. If you must go then, keep your plans flexible.
A simple 2 day itinerary
Friday night: Leave Delhi after work. Sleep on the way.
Saturday morning: Reach Palampur, check into your hotel, freshen up and eat a proper breakfast. Then head to Neugal Khad, a stream with a view point where people sit for hours doing nothing. That’s the point.
After that, visit a tea estate. Bundla Tea Estate lets you walk through the plantation and buy fresh Kangra tea. It costs almost nothing and it’s one of those things you’ll remember.
Saturday evening: Drive to Baijnath Temple, an old Shiva temple built around the 13th century. Sit there for a while as the sun goes down behind the hills.
Sunday morning: Go to Tashi Jong Monastery for some quiet, or Andretta, a small artists’ village about 13 km away where potters still work by hand. If you like adventure, Bir Billing is around 30 km away and it’s one of the top paragliding spots in the world.
Sunday afternoon: Grab lunch, buy some tea and local jam, and start back. You’ll be home late night, tired but in a good way.
